Descripción

It measures the hydrogen exhaled after ingesting lactose. When lactose is not properly digested, it reaches the colon, where bacteria ferment it, producing hydrogen that can be detected in the breath. Results are available in approximately 7 working days.

This test detects functional lactose malabsorption (whether genetic or acquired), unlike the Genetic Lactose Intolerance Test, which identifies only the hereditary cause. The two tests are complementary: genetic vs. functional.

¿Is it suitable for me?

This test is for you if you experience symptoms of lactose intolerance (bloating, gas or diarrhoea) after consuming milk or dairy products and would like to confirm the diagnosis with a functional test.

How does it work?

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the test work?

Measures gases in the breath after ingesting lactose.

Is it painful?

No, it is completely non-invasive. It is a sample of exhaled air.

How long does the Lactose Breath Test take?

The Lactose Breath Test takes approximately 2–3 hours. Several breath samples are collected at different time points after ingesting the lactose solution to measure changes in exhaled hydrogen levels over time.

Is it reliable?

Yes, it is one of the standard methods to diagnose lactose intolerance.

Do I need any special preparation before the Lactose Breath Test?

Yes. You should fast for 8–12 hours before the test, avoid antibiotics during the 4 weeks before the test, avoid probiotics during the 2 weeks beforehand, and follow a specific diet on the day before the test. You will receive detailed instructions together with the kit.

What happens if the result is positive?

Your doctor will recommend dietary adjustments or treatments.

What is the difference between the Lactose Breath Test and the Genetic Test?

The Breath Test detects functional lactose malabsorption (whether of genetic origin or acquired due to an intestinal disease). The Genetic Lactose Intolerance Test identifies only the hereditary cause (primary lactase deficiency). The two tests are complementary: genetic vs. functional.
