The Xylose Breath Test assesses the absorptive capacity of the small intestine and helps detect alterations in the intestinal mucosa or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). When gut dysbiosis, damage to the intestinal mucosa or SIBO is present, xylose is metabolised abnormally, producing hydrogen that can be detected in the breath.

Together with the SIBO Breath Test and the Clinical Gut Microbiome, it forms part of a comprehensive assessment of intestinal health. Results are available in approximately 7 working days.

Descripción

The Xylose Breath Test consists of the oral administration of a xylose solution, followed by the collection of exhaled air samples every 30 minutes for 3 and a half hours (210 minutes).
Xylose is a simple sugar that is normally absorbed in the small intestine without being metabolized. When the intestinal mucosa is damaged or there is a transport deficiency, this sugar reaches the colon, where it is fermented by bacteria. The process produces gases (hydrogen and methane) that pass into the blood and are eliminated through exhaled air, allowing them to be detected in the test.
This test provides precise information to assess intestinal function and can help in the diagnosis of absorption disorders such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or damage to the intestinal mucosa.

¿Is it suitable for me?

This test is for you if you suspect abnormalities of the intestinal mucosa, impaired nutrient absorption or bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine that may be related to gut dysbiosis or altered intestinal permeability.

How does it work?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the test safe?

Yes, it is completely safe, non-invasive, and without significant side effects.

What is the difference between the Xylose Test and the SIBO Breath Test?

The SIBO Breath Test specifically detects bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine by measuring hydrogen and methane levels. The Xylose Test provides a broader assessment of the absorptive function of the small intestine. Both tests are complementary in the evaluation of intestinal health.

Is it necessary to stop my medication before the test?

Some medications may affect the results. Consult your doctor before taking the test.

Is this test used to diagnose celiac disease?

It is not a direct diagnosis, but it can be a useful complementary test when celiac disease or other intestinal mucosal disorders are suspected.

What is the Xylose Breath Test used for?

The Xylose Breath Test evaluates the absorptive function of the small intestine. It is useful for detecting damage to the intestinal mucosa (such as that caused by undiagnosed coeliac disease), general malabsorption or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) that affects nutrient absorption.

Do I need any special preparation before the Xylose Breath Test?

Yes. You should fast for 8–12 hours, avoid antibiotics during the 4 weeks before the test and probiotics during the 2 weeks beforehand. You will receive detailed instructions together with the self-collection kit.
