Coeliac disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder triggered by the ingestion of gluten. In genetically predisposed individuals, the immune system damages the intestinal lining, impairing nutrient absorption. The genetic gluten intolerance test identifies whether you have this hereditary predisposition to coeliac disease.

Unlike a functional gluten intolerance test, this genetic test provides a definitive result: if the result is negative, it virtually rules out the possibility of developing coeliac disease. It is especially useful in uncertain diagnoses and, in many cases, helps avoid an intestinal biopsy.

How is coeliac disease diagnosed in adults?

The adult coeliac disease test combines antibody testing (anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA and anti-endomysial antibodies), the genetic predisposition test for coeliac disease (HLA DQ2/DQ8), and, if positive, an intestinal biopsy. The genetic test is particularly useful because a negative result rules out the disease with a 99% Negative Predictive Value (NPV).

What is the difference between coeliac disease, gluten sensitivity and non-coeliac gluten intolerance?

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease that causes confirmed intestinal damage. Non-coeliac gluten intolerance or non-coeliac gluten sensitivity causes similar symptoms but without intestinal damage or HLA markers. The genetic gluten intolerance test detects only the hereditary basis of coeliac disease.
