In 1995 the winner of the Echevarne Foundation National Oncology Prize was Dr. Carlos López-Otín for his work “Identificación y caracterización estructural y funcional de nuevos enzimas proteolíticos e inhibidores de proteasas asociados a carcinomas mamarios”.
For the winner, who holds a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in Chemistry from the Complutense University of Madrid, this work is the culmination of several years of research into the molecular processes that regulate the spread of cancerous cells in breast tissue. He has been Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oviedo since 1993.
