In 2003, a special third edition of the Prize was held, coinciding with the 10th Anniversary of the Echevarne Foundation, with the winners being ex-aequo Drs. Xosé Bustelo and Manuel Serrano for their respective works “Caracterización funcional de la familia de oncoproteínas Vav” and “Mecanismos de supresión tumoral en respuesta al estrés oncogénico”.
Dr. Xosé Bustelo holds a degree and doctorate in Biology from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He completed his post-doctoral studies with Dr. Mariano Barbacid at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute (Princeton, New Jersey) and currently works at the Cancer Research Centre of Salamanca.
Dr. Manuel Serrano has a degree in Biology from the Autonomous University of Madrid and a doctorate in the same specialty from the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Centre of the Higher Council for Scientific Research. He completed postdoctoral studies at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (NY) under the direction of Dr. David Leach. He currently directs a research group at the National Centre for Oncological Research in Madrid.
