WINNER OF THE 7TH ECHEVARNE FOUNDATION NATIONAL ONCOLOGY PRIZE

Dr. Elías Campo, awarded the prize for his research on the genetics and molecular biology of human leukaemia

The Echevarne Foundation has awarded its annual prize to Dr. Elías Campo, a Spanish pathologist and researcher, for his work in the field of the genetics and molecular biology of human leukaemia. He is considered a pioneer and international leader in research into lymphocytic leukaemia and mantle cell lymphoma, and the work done by his laboratory, alongside projects in collaboration with other national and international researchers, has managed to decipher the genome of the disease, making it possible to make progress with its diagnosis.

1st Echevarne Foundation National Oncology Prize

In 1995 the winner of the Echevarne Foundation National Oncology Prize was Dr. Carlos López-Otín for his work “Identificación y caracterización estructural y funcional de nuevos enzimas proteolíticos e inhibidores de proteasas asociados a carcinomas mamarios”.

For the winner, who holds a bachelor’s degree and doctorate in Chemistry from the Complutense University of Madrid, this work is the culmination of several years of research into the molecular processes that regulate the spread of cancerous cells in breast tissue. He has been Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oviedo since 1993.

2nd Echevarne Foundation National Oncology Prize

The second Prize was awarded in 1999 to Dr. María A. Blasco for her work on the “Implicación de la telomerasa y los telomeros en inestabilidad cromosómica y cáncer”.

With a degree and doctorate in Biology from the Autonomous University of Madrid, she began her studies on the activity of the Telomerase enzyme and its involvement in cancer during her post-doctoral stay at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York (1993-1996). She currently directs the Molecular Oncology Programme at the National Centre for Oncological Research (CNIO) in Madrid. The study and identification of the genes involved in these telomeric maintenance mechanisms is fundamental to understanding tumour progression.

3rd Echevarne Foundation National Oncology Prize

In 2003, a special third edition of the Prize was held, coinciding with the 10th Anniversary of the Echevarne Foundation, with the winners being ex-aequo Drs. Xosé Bustelo and Manuel Serrano for their respective works “Caracterización funcional de la familia de oncoproteínas Vav” and “Mecanismos de supresión tumoral en respuesta al estrés oncogénico”.

Dr. Xosé Bustelo holds a degree and doctorate in Biology from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He completed his post-doctoral studies with Dr. Mariano Barbacid at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute (Princeton, New Jersey) and currently works at the Cancer Research Centre of Salamanca.
Dr. Manuel Serrano has a degree in Biology from the Autonomous University of Madrid and a doctorate in the same specialty from the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Centre of the Higher Council for Scientific Research. He completed postdoctoral studies at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (NY) under the direction of Dr. David Leach. He currently directs a research group at the National Centre for Oncological Research in Madrid.

4th Echevarne Foundation National Oncology Prize

Awarded in a special edition to recognise the work of transnational research in molecular and clinical oncology, on this occasion, the prize was awarded ex-aequo to Professors Emili Montserrat and Jesús F. San Miguel for their respective works: “La proteína ZAP-70 como algoritmo terapéutico en leucemia linfática crónica” and “La biología celular del mieloma y sus aplicaciones en el tratamiento de mieloma múltiple”.

Professor Emili Montserrat has a degree in Medicine from the University of Salamanca and a Doctorate from the UB. He is currently Professor of Medicine and director of the Institute of Haematology and Oncology at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. He is a founding member of the International Workshop on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia and WHO advisor in this specialty. He has been president of the European Hematology Association. He is currently a member of the International Committee of the American Society of Hematology and is a member of the editorial board of the most prestigious international journals on haematology.
Professor Jesús F. San Miguel holds a degree in Medicine from the University of Navarra and a Doctorate from the University of Salamanca. He is currently Professor of Medicine at this University, Head of Haematology at the University Hospital of Salamanca and Deputy Director of the Cancer Research Centre of the same city. He is a founding member of the European Myeloma Network and the Scientific Committee of the International Myeloma Foundation and Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. He has recently been distinguished with the Waldenstrom Award for his research in this field.

5th Echevarne Foundation National Oncology Prize

The Echevarne Foundation presented its 5th National Oncology Prize to Dr. Eugenio Santos, director of the National Cancer Centre and the person to discover the first oncogene in human tumours.

The prize, awarded to the work entitled “La especificidad funcional de las oncoproteinas Ras y sus reguladores”, is in recognition of this Spanish scientist’s professional career in the field of oncological research.

6th Echevarne Foundation National Oncology Prize

The Echevarne Foundation awarded the 6th National Oncology Prize to Dr. Manel Esteller, Director of the Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Programme of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and Head of the Cancer Epigenetics Group, as well as Professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona School of Medicine and ICREA Research Professor.

The prize has been awarded for the work entitled “Epigenómica del Cáncer: del conocimiento a las aplicaciones”. Esteller’s work concentrates on the study of epigenetic mechanisms, revealing that a series of non-genetic factors are involved in our development, as well as in multiple diseases due to aberrant changes in them. His studies have made a significant contribution to our understanding of the behaviour of cancer cells, especially in the deregulation of tumour suppressor genes and repetitive sequences in cancer. Thanks in part to these studies, new diagnostic tests have been developed and new treatment applications focusing on epigenetic drugs are being tested, especially against cancer.
